Donkey Boys

About 1892
London Road / the Common, Tunbridge Wells

This photograph was taken by Percy Lankester for the book A Pictorial History of Tunbridge Wells. Donkey riding is said to have been introduced in the town in 1801 and it appears to have been popular for at least another 100 years after that.

My Gran used to tell me a story about a house in the donkey stand road that had secret tunnels running down to Vale Towers in London Road.  Has anyone else had this story too?
(Anne Campbell)
'One of the small roads leading through the Common used to be called "The Donkey stand".  A pity the name seems to have been dropped'
